In the console version, this was an excuse to feature traditional 2D levels, followed by overblown 3D stages. Act one sees players control classic Sonic, while act two sees players control his modern equivalent. The line between traditional and contemporary gameplay has also been blurred, making Sonic Generations feel more like a glorified remix title, instead of a monumental merger of styles.įor those unaware of the game's structure, each stage features two acts.

Containing fewer levels than its HD equivalent, and no overworld to explore, the main story mode can be bested in a couple of hours tops, a problem made worst by the fact that some of the stages are direct ports from well-worn past instalments, which many will know like the back of their hands. Unfortunately, despite a bevy of extras, one of the game's biggest problems is that the single-player campaign is far too short. When you throw 3DS StreetPass features and online multiplayer into the mix, the 3DS port definitely feels like a standalone title.
SONIC GENERATIONS 2D PS3
The likes of Casino Night, Mushroom Hill and the excellent Tropical Resort are all included, giving 3DS users reason to buy the game, regardless of whether they own PS3 or 360 versions. Considering our disdain for today's smart mouth Sonic, we can't say that we mind the omission of the cut-scenes, although it's sure to bother some people.Īnd it's not just the storytelling that has been tweaked for the 3DS version, the handheld port also features a collection of exclusive levels, nowhere to be found in its home console counterpart.

The storytelling takes much more of a back seat in the 3DS version, with cut-scenes removed in favour of text-based conversations between characters. The rip in time brings16-bit Sonic face-to-face with his modern day, jive-talking counterpart in an adventure that blends together contemporary and traditional gameplay styles.well, sort of. The story involves a new and dangerous enemy capable of ripping through the space time continuum and imprisoning all who stand in its way. Can Sega's iconic speedster make as smooth a transition to the 3DS, or is the ageing mascot trying to pull a fast one?
SONIC GENERATIONS 2D PORTABLE
However, as any Sonic historian worth their salt will tell you, his portable offerings have maintained a consistently high standard, with the likes of Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush sticking to the traditional 2D formula that made him a star. Needless to say, we were delighted to see the world's most famous hedgehog find his feet after a few dubious console outings involving Black Knights and Secret Rings. Sonic Generations made quite the impression when we ploughed through the PlayStation 3 version last month.
